Golden Horseshoe Golf Club – Colonial Class with Modern Polish | Williamsburg, Virginia
Tucked in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg, Golden Horseshoe Golf Club is a blend of classic design, mature hardwoods, and American golf history. The Gold Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1963 and renovated by Rees Jones in 2017, remains one of the finest examples of parkland golf in the Southeast. Its sister course, the Green Course, was designed by Rees Jones in 1991 and offers a contrasting, modern layout that flows through rolling terrain and natural ravines.
The Gold Course is a traditional, shot-maker’s test: no homes, just pure golf with elevated greens, water carries, and deep bunkering. Its signature par-3 16th—playing over a lake to a peninsula green—remains one of the most photographed holes in Virginia.
📸 Behind the Lens: A Step Back in Time
Photographing Golden Horseshoe was like walking into a storybook. The Gold Course, in particular, has a reverent stillness—tall trees filter golden light, and the layout winds through nature without ever feeling forced. I was drawn to the 16th from every angle, especially early morning when the mist lifted just above the water’s surface. The blend of design pedigree, colonial setting, and immaculate conditioning made this shoot unforgettable.
