The Challenge of Camellia: Hole 10 at Augusta National

The tenth hole at Augusta National Golf Club, named “Camellia,” is famously known as the starting point of the back nine where many Masters tournaments have been won or lost. This 495-yard par-4 is a test of skill and strategy, presenting a downhill tee shot and an uphill approach to a severely sloped green.

A Historic Overview

Camellia’s reputation as a critical juncture in the Masters is well earned. Its demanding layout requires precision from the tee and a careful approach to avoid the bunker guarding the right of the green and the steep decline to the left. Players’ mastery of Camellia often predicts their performance through the infamous back nine.

Memorable Masters Moments

Arguably the most memorable moment on Camellia occurred during the 2012 Masters when Bubba Watson made a daring shot from the pine straw between two trees on his way to securing the green jacket. This shot is celebrated as one of the most audacious and skillful in the history of the tournament.

The Photographer’s View

The dramatic elevation changes and the natural beauty of Camellia provide a perfect backdrop for stunning photographs. I was absolutely gobsmacked the first time I saw the extreme elevation change. I love the “fright bunker” which looks like it is hugged up against the green, but is at least twenty yards separate.  This is probably my favorite hole on the course (It’s a tough choice!}

Visit and Experience Camellia

Golf fans and visitors often find hole 10 to be a turning point in their experience of the Masters, where the pressure builds, and the true test begins. Witnessing play at Camellia offers a deep appreciation for the challenges and thrills of championship golf.

Each week, we share a stunning golf image and a heartfelt, hilarious, or inspiring story. While they may not always align, both aim to elevate the game and uplift those who love it. These images aren’t for sale—they’re simply here to be enjoyed, just as the stories are meant to inspire, entertain, and celebrate the spirit of golf.

The “Secret” of Golf

Golf is an extraordinarily unique game. Like so many, I struggled to find the right formula – the correct ingredients to play high-level golf. I cycled through thousands of tips, methods, keys, theories etc. None of which had yielded any better results.

The search for the ‘Secret’ is an elusive prize that nearly  everyone who picks up a golf club strives to find. The secret is presented industry-wide as a magical move within the golf swing that will assure the outcome of the shot.

At one point during my several trips to Carmel Valley Ranch in Central California, the secret to golf presented itself to me, much in the way Buddha once stated, ‘when the student is ready, the teacher will appear.’ I guess I was ready.

The ‘secret’ of golf is elegant in its simplicity. There is no magical, perfect swing. It’s already within each of us, in the same way that a seedling has everything it needs to grow to be a full grown tree. All that is missing is time, water, sunlight etc. In the same vein, what is missing from our golf swings, is the real-time awareness of what is occurring during the swing.

Paradoxically, the continued striving to find the perfect swing, the constant changing, manipulating, tips, keys, methods and theories move us as golfers further away from discovering our golf swings. This distinction not only changed my golf game and swing, but also my life and the choices I have subsequently made.

Golf is the most amazing vehicle for learning and development and having discovered its secret has allowed me to enjoy the game far more than I could have envisioned.
