Wintergreen Resort

Perched high in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Wintergreen Resort offers a golf experience unlike any other in the region. Its Devil’s Knob course, designed by Ellis Maples, holds the distinction of being the highest golf course in Virginia at nearly 4,000 feet. The Stoney Creek course, a Rees Jones design, stretches across the valley below, framed by streams and hardwood forests.

Devil’s Knob is known for its panoramic views and cooler summer temperatures, a welcome respite for golfers. Meanwhile, Stoney Creek provides a more traditional layout, blending mountain backdrops with strategic water features.

I’ll never forget photographing Wintergreen on a crisp autumn morning, when the foliage exploded in reds and golds against the blue mountain ridges. There’s something about standing on a tee box at Devil’s Knob, camera in hand, that makes you feel on top of the world. It’s a reminder that golf isn’t always about the score — sometimes it’s about the view.
