Cypress Point #15: Where Land, Sea, and Nerve Converge

Pebble Beach, California

Some golf holes test your swing. Others test your courage. But the 15th at Cypress Point goes one step further — it tests your sense of wonder. Perched on a ledge above the restless Pacific, this is one of those rare places in golf where you can feel the entire world pressing in around you: sea wind in your chest, salt on your lips, surf exploding against ancient rock. Even after all these years of photographing some of the most beautiful holes on earth, few scenes have ever stopped me in my tracks quite like this one.

Every time I return to Cypress Point, I’m reminded that it is truly a course built from the elements rather than laid upon them. The 15th proves that better than anywhere. No architect — not even the great Alister MacKenzie — could have “created” a moment like this. He simply arranged grass and bunkers where nature gave him permission. Everything else is the artistry of the coastline itself: jagged stone, contorted cypress trees, and the living roar of the Pacific crashing into the Monterey Peninsula.

On the day I captured this photograph, the wind had a little attitude — not angry, just expressive, the way it often is here. The light was shifting fast, racing across the tops of the rocks and splashing warm tones onto the cliff face. Below, the ocean was in one of its moods, sending foamy white bursts up the black rock. The scene had that electric mix of serenity and danger that makes this hole unforgettable: calm sky, violent water, perfect green. I’ve always loved contrasts like that. They remind you that golf, at its best, is played at the intersection of skill and emotion.

Most golfers remember the heroic tee shot across the ocean on the 16th, but those who truly know Cypress Point understand that the 15th is the setup — the tightening of the story just before the climax. It is the moment when you stand above the rocks and think to yourself, This is already incredible… how can it possibly get better from here? The hole isn’t long, but its personality is larger than any yardage book can capture. It requires finesse, imagination, and presence — traits that MacKenzie always valued more than brute power.

What I love most about this spot is the way it makes you feel small in the best possible way. So many golf courses try to celebrate themselves; Cypress Point celebrates the land. Its most dramatic holes simply guide you into a place that already carried thousands of years of meaning long before golf ever arrived. Standing behind the 15th green, listening to the water collide with the cliffs below, you get a sense that you’re experiencing something timeless — something that has outlived generations and will outlive many more.

Photographing Cypress Point is never just a technical exercise for me. It’s emotional work. The place gets into your system. It demands that you slow down, breathe deeper, and pay attention. The wind, the light, the horizon — they all speak, if you’re willing to listen. And on this day, as the late-afternoon sun filtered through thin clouds and lit the landscape with a painter’s touch, it felt like the scene was revealing something rare. The result is this image, which isn’t just a photograph of a golf hole, but a portrait of a coastline alive with energy.

Golfers who have been fortunate enough to stand on this tee know the feeling immediately: a mix of awe and anticipation, as if the earth itself is urging you to take the shot. Those who dream of playing here someday will sense it too. The 15th captures the essence of what makes Cypress Point one of the most celebrated courses in the world — not because of its exclusivity, but because of its authenticity. It is a place where nature and golf coexist in perfect tension.

If this image brings you back to memories of your own rounds here, or sparks a longing to visit someday, I invite you to explore it further. This photograph is part of the Golf As Life Signature Collection, printed in formats that honor the depth, drama, and beauty of the scene.
