Some places in golf feel less like courses and more like chapters in your own story. For me, Karsten Creek will always be one of those places. As an Oklahoma State graduate, I’ve walked these fairways in every season and every kind of light, camera in hand, always chasing that elusive mix of beauty, challenge, and emotion that makes a golf landscape unforgettable. From the moment Tom Fazio carved this course into the rolling countryside west of Stillwater, it became more than a home course for the OSU Cowboys — it became a sanctuary for anyone who loves the game at its purest.
The photograph above was taken on one of those mornings when the world seems to pause for a breath. A flag gently catching a bit of breeze, Lake Louise stretching out like a sheet of polished glass, and a sunrise so magnificent that the sky itself felt like it was leaning forward to play. When the rays began to push through the clouds, fanning out across the water, I remember thinking, This is why I do what I do. Golf is a sport of precision, yes — but it is also a sport of heart. You feel that truth here more than almost anywhere.
Karsten Creek has always held that duality: raw power wrapped in quiet beauty. It’s the rare golf course where you sense both the architect’s intention and nature’s authority in equal measure. Fazio designed it to test the best collegiate players in the country, but he also let the setting do the heavy lifting. Towering oaks. Native grasses. Water that appears not just as a hazard, but as a companion to the round. And of course, the ever-changing Oklahoma skies — an entire art gallery above your head for 18 holes.
I’ve photographed this course dozens of times, but every visit feels like a new introduction. No two mornings are ever the same. Sometimes the light comes in soft and silvery, fading slowly into the water. Some evenings, the sky turns into a spectacle of color you could never plan for — the kind of thing that makes you stop adjusting the camera and simply stare. And then there are the mornings like this one, when the sun seems to rise with intention. When the first light breaks across the lake and you know instantly that this is a moment you will be grateful to have witnessed, both as a photographer and as someone who genuinely loves this game.
Golfers often describe Karsten Creek as difficult, demanding, even punishing for the unprepared. And that’s true. But it’s also one of the courses where golf feels closest to art. Every hole forces you to make decisions as carefully as a painter chooses brush strokes. Every shot asks for commitment. And every overlook — especially those around Lake Louise — rewards you with a reminder that golf is not just a competition, but a meditation.
The phrase on this image, Play with Heart, Win with Skill, captures what I’ve always believed about Karsten Creek. You can study yardages and shape shots all day long, but the course demands something more: courage. The willingness to take on a line over the water. The humility to lay up when the wind turns stubborn. The presence of mind to stand on a green like this at sunrise and absorb the moment before putting a tee in the ground.
This is one of the places that helped shape me — not only as a photographer, but as a person who has spent a lifetime sharing beauty with others. Every time I return, I rediscover something I hadn’t noticed before. A shift in the grass. A new reflection pattern. A sky so dramatic it feels hand-painted. Karsten Creek continues to remind me that golf isn’t just played; it’s experienced.
