On the Kohala Coast of the Big Island, Mauna Lani Auberge Resort is where golf meets paradise.
Its two courses, the North and South, showcase Hawaii’s dramatic volcanic landscapes — with holes cut through black lava fields, fringed by palm trees, and kissed by Pacific breezes. The South Course is famous for its par-4 17th, one of the most photographed holes in the world. The North Course, meanwhile, winds through kiawe forests and offers a more secluded, tranquil experience.
Mauna Lani is not just golf in Hawaii — it is golf that defines Hawaii. Every time I’ve photographed Mauna Lani, I’ve felt humbled by the contrasts: rugged lava, lush green turf, and endless ocean. Standing behind the lens on the greens at sunset, with the Pacific glowing gold, I thought to myself: if golf has a postcard to send to the world, this is it. It hass been a number of years since my last visit to The Big Island. I have been there at least a dozen time, and I always wonder why anyone lives anywhere else on earth.
