Sunrise Over a Legend: Oakmont Country Club

Few golf courses hold the weight of history like Oakmont Country Club. Located just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Oakmont has long been revered as one of the most challenging and prestigious venues in American golf. Designed in 1903 by Henry Fownes, this historic course has hosted more combined USGA and PGA championships than any other course in the United States, including nine U.S. Opens—with the tenth set for next month.

From Ben Hogan’s triumph in 1953 to Johnny Miller’s legendary 63 in 1973, Oakmont has served as the proving ground for golf’s greats. Its famously fast greens, deep bunkers, and minimal tree coverage give it a signature look—and a reputation that strikes both awe and fear into players.
This image captures the peaceful contrast to that reputation: a radiant sunrise casts golden light across the 18th fairway, with a wisp of morning fog lingering in the hollows. It’s a rare moment of stillness before the storm—an intimate look at a course that’s seen it all.
From the Photographer:

“I’ve photographed Oakmont several times, but this morning was something special. The quiet, the colors, the light mist clinging to the low spots—it felt like the course was taking a deep breath before its next big chapter.”

Each week, we share a stunning golf image and a heartfelt, hilarious, or inspiring story. While they may not always align, both aim to elevate the game and uplift those who love it. These images aren’t for sale—they’re simply here to be enjoyed, just as the stories are meant to inspire, entertain, and celebrate the spirit of golf.

On Pinehurst

“Donald Ross did a lot of impactful things, a lot of important things. One of my favorite quotes that he said, went like this: ‘A country which gets golf minded need not worry about the honor, the integrity and the honesty of its people.’“That hangs in Golf House Pinehurst for every one of our staff to see.
“Pinehurst isn’t a country, but when you come here, you feel the energy, the excitement, the celebration of the game. People here get the game. When they feel it, it fits. We fit here at Pinehurst because it’s about golf. It’s at the center of this community. It bleeds through everything that’s here.
“I believe our country – the world – would be a better place if every young boy and girl could grow up on a golf course. Boy, if they could grow up at Pinehurst, it would be even better.’’
