Portstewart Golf Club: Golf on the Edge of the World
There are golf courses you play — and then there are golf courses you remember. Portstewart Golf Club, located along Northern Ireland’s rugged Causeway Coast, is one of the latter. With towering dunes, sweeping ocean views, and one of the most unforgettable opening holes in golf, this course is a masterpiece sculpted by nature and refined by generations of golfers.
I visited Portstewart on a photography assignment with PerryGolf and quickly realized this wasn’t going to be an ordinary shoot. The front nine dances through massive dunes, each hole framed by golden grass, dramatic elevation, and the ever-changing North Atlantic light. It’s a wild ride — blind tee shots, wind that demands imagination, and scenery that belongs in a travel magazine.
There’s something spiritual about this place. Golf here feels less like a game and more like a journey — through centuries-old links land, with views stretching from the River Bann to the cliffs of Donegal. For golfers who crave authenticity and adventure, Portstewart delivers both in spades.
The image I captured at Portstewart remains one of my personal favorites — a reminder of what makes golf more than just sport. It’s about landscapes, moments, and places that stay with you long after the round ends.

Golf is a shadowy melding of physics and hope. It’s a universal challenge that somehow demands your complete individual attention. The sounds of golf are casually addictive – an awesome strike, laughter dancing across the fairways and the playful whisper when the ball drops. I love it all.
Golf involves people watching you and your shot. Being naturally shy, but competitive, I initially found this to be very awkward. When I realized how many people care less about the score and more about being outside in good company, I felt really grateful. Playing golf inspired me to reconsider what I value.
There is always something new to discover and I love that. From course architecture, to working on your swing or reading about the game’s most interesting players, you can spend a lifetime learning about golf. More importantly, I enjoy connecting with people who appreciate it.
