Old Waverly Golf Club

West Point, Mississippi

A Tribute to Jeffersonian Elegance: Old Waverly Golf Club

Tucked into the rolling hills of West Point, Mississippi, Old Waverly Golf Club is a Southern gem that blends architectural heritage, championship golf, and heartfelt hospitality. Opened in 1988, Old Waverly was the vision of George Bryan, a native Mississippian with a deep love for golf and history. His admiration for Thomas Jefferson shaped the club’s distinctive aesthetic—including the elegant clubhouse, which is modeled after Jefferson’s Monticello.

Originally developed as a single-course private club, Old Waverly has since grown into a 36-hole resort destination, adding Mossy Oak Golf Club just across the road in 2016. Together, they offer a complete golfing experience: classic parkland beauty at Old Waverly and rugged, minimalist charm at Mossy Oak. Guests can stay overnight in one of several well-appointed cottages and villas, making it a true golf retreat.

The club has hosted numerous prestigious events, including the 1999 U.S. Women’s Open, and continues to be celebrated for its immaculate conditioning and warm, welcoming atmosphere.

This image, centered on the putting green, frames the stately clubhouse in golden light—a unique architectural anchor that gives the property its signature Southern soul.

From the Photographer:

“When I first stepped onto the putting green at Old Waverly, I had to blink twice. The Monticello-inspired clubhouse is unlike anything I’ve seen in golf. There’s something fitting about this blend of sport, symmetry, and Southern grace—George Bryan built more than a course; he built a tribute.”

Each week, we share a stunning golf image and a heartfelt, hilarious, or inspiring story. While they may not always align, both aim to elevate the game and uplift those who love it. These images aren’t for sale—they’re simply here to be enjoyed, just as the stories are meant to inspire, entertain, and celebrate the spirit of golf.

When You’re Good, You’re Good

“In 1986 I was playing so poorly I just grabbed one of my buddy’s clubs.  They were Pings and I said, “I’m going to use your Pings this week.’ I actually went out and had to focus more and they were completely different looking clubs and I actually played pretty well.

“I didn’t change my swing or my attitude. I just paid a little more attention to what I was doing and I kind of turned it around a little bit.

“But for some people, they’re more knowledgeable on golf swings, I’m not at all – I barely know anything to tell anyone. So, my brain’s usually clear. It’s more of other things that bother me, but for a lot of Tour players, they struggle and they bounce back. When you’re good, you’re good.’’
