Whistling Straits

Kohler, Wisconsin

A Touch of Ireland on the Shores of Lake Michigan

At first glance, Whistling Straits looks like it’s been carved into the ragged coast of Ireland—windswept, raw, and timeless. But this spectacular course is right here in the heartland of America, perched on the bluffs above Lake Michigan near Kohler, Wisconsin. Designed by the legendary Pete Dye and brought to life through the vision of Herb Kohler, Whistling Straits is one of the most ambitious and unforgettable golf experiences in the world.

Hole #10, a par 4 known as “Voyageur,” runs along the water and plays into the wind, with a rolling fairway that tempts and taunts from the tee. With the endless blue of Lake Michigan stretching beyond the green, it’s easy to lose yourself in the illusion—you’re not in County Clare or County Kerry… but it certainly feels like you are.

Whistling Straits has hosted multiple PGA Championships, a U.S. Senior Open, and most recently, the 2021 Ryder Cup, further cementing its status as a modern classic. But even more than its tournament resume, it’s the drama of the land—the movement, the bunkering, the unpredictable winds—that captures the soul of the game.

From the Photographer:

“Every time I walk this course, I have to remind myself that it’s not ancient. Pete Dye and Herb Kohler created something magical here. On Hole 10, with Lake Michigan to your left and the fairway dancing away in front of you, it’s as close to Ireland as you can get without a passport.”

Each week, we share a stunning golf image and a heartfelt, hilarious, or inspiring story. While they may not always align, both aim to elevate the game and uplift those who love it. These images aren’t for sale—they’re simply here to be enjoyed, just as the stories are meant to inspire, entertain, and celebrate the spirit of golf.

The King

“Arnold Palmer, above everything else, behind all the adulation, was a professional golfer. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that, given all the amazing things he’s done and the profile he’s had in so many other areas of philanthropy, aviation, etc. But as a professional golfer, he understands the fact that the mind, the body, the spirit, and the energy of players have to be directed and have to be basically fulfilled by that individual.
