Some places don’t just invite a return—they demand it. The Ritz-Carlton Penha Longa Resort is one of those places for me. Just a few miles from Lisbon, this corner of Portugal feels like a world apart, layered with history, culture, and an almost effortless sense of beauty.
I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Penha Longa twice, and it’s the kind of destination I’d happily jump on a plane to revisit again—without hesitation. The resort sits gracefully within the rolling hills of Sintra, a place so rich in atmosphere that it feels curated by time itself. Lush fairways wind through centuries-old trees, framed by historic buildings and distant hills that seem to soften the pace of everything around them.
The golf here is exceptional. Designed by Robert Trent Jones II, the course makes full use of the terrain, offering variety, strategy, and moments of quiet drama. It’s the kind of golf that stays interesting without ever feeling forced—challenging, rewarding, and beautifully integrated into its surroundings.
But Penha Longa is more than golf. A short drive takes you to the Atlantic coast, where rugged cliffs meet the sea and small fishing villages dot the shoreline. Inland, fairytale castles rise from the hills, their silhouettes unmistakably Sintra. The food is memorable, the wines exceptional, and the rhythm of daily life feels refreshingly unhurried.
Sintra itself is a must-visit—an enchanting town woven together by narrow streets, tiled buildings, and layers of royal history. At one time, this region was the winter retreat for royalty from across Europe, and remnants of that era still linger in the grand old homes scattered throughout the countryside. You feel that legacy everywhere, not as a museum piece, but as part of the living landscape.
What stayed with me most was the completeness of the experience. Great golf. Thoughtful hospitality. Culture, cuisine, coastline—all within easy reach. It’s rare to find a place where so many elements come together so seamlessly.
This image captures that sense of harmony: manicured greens set against historic architecture, sunlight filtering through ancient trees, and the quiet confidence of a place that knows exactly what it is. If it sparks memories of your own time in Portugal—or plants the seed for a future visit—I invite you to explore it in the Golf As Life Signature Collection, where destinations that stir the soul are given the space to linger, long after the journey ends.
