Carved into the rolling hills of northwest Illinois, The General at Eagle Ridge Resort is one of the Midwest’s most scenic and challenging courses.
Designed by Roger Packard and Andy North, the layout features dramatic elevation changes of up to 250 feet, giving players panoramic views of the Mississippi River Valley. Signature holes like the par-4 2nd, which drops nearly 200 feet from tee to fairway, make for unforgettable golf. The course combines wooded ridges, limestone cliffs, and tranquil lakes to create a layout that feels both natural and exhilarating. The General is a reminder that great golf isn’t limited to the coasts — sometimes it’s hidden in America’s heartland.
I remember photographing The General on a misty morning when the valleys were filled with fog, leaving only the hilltops and fairways exposed. It was as if the course floated above the clouds, suspended in its own world. That kind of scene is why I love this work — finding magic where golf and landscape intersect. This photo was taken later in the morning when the low light highlighted the crazy clouds you get in the north country mid morning. What a cool place!
