Windsor Golf Hotel & Country Club: A Walk Through Kenya’s Green Heart

Nairobi, Kenya

Some golf courses impress you with architecture. Others overwhelm you with scenery. But Windsor Golf Hotel & Country Club in Nairobi does something rarer — it welcomes you into a landscape so alive, so vibrant, that you feel more like an explorer than a player. Kenya has always carried a sense of adventure for me, and Windsor embodies that spirit beautifully. Here, the game unfolds not only across fairways and greens, but across a canvas of towering trees, dense forest edges, and wildlife-filled air.

This photograph captures one of my favorite memories from Windsor: two golfers walking down a sunlit fairway, their shadows long and expressive, swallowed gradually by the deep greens of the surrounding forest. It’s the kind of scene that reminds you golf is at its best when it’s simple — just people, land, sunlight, and the freedom of movement. No carts, no rush, just the rhythm of walking and the companionship that comes with it.

Kenya’s equatorial light has a quality unlike anywhere else I’ve photographed. It doesn’t just illuminate the landscape — it reveals it. On this afternoon, the sun hung at the perfect angle, painting alternating patches of light and shadow across the grass, like brushstrokes on a living canvas. The fairway rolled softly between the forest edges, and the trees towered above like guardians of the quiet moment. In the distance, a thick cloud billowed upward, catching the blue of the sky in a way that made the entire scene feel cinematic.

Windsor is not a course carved out of wilderness — it feels more like it was invited into the landscape. The forest embraces the holes rather than retreating from them. Each fairway feels like a natural corridor, shaped by the contours of the land and the deep-rooted trees that have been here long before the game arrived. And while the course is undeniably beautiful, it also carries that distinctly Kenyan energy: vibrant, warm, and full of life.

One of the joys of photographing golf around the world is seeing how culture and geography imprint themselves on the game. In Ireland, it’s the wind. In Scotland, it’s the history. In Arizona, it’s the desert light. But in Kenya — especially at Windsor — it’s the harmony of movement. People walk here. They talk. They laugh. They experience the game as a shared journey rather than a sequence of shots. Watching these golfers stroll side by side, silhouettes stretching ahead of them, I felt something deeply familiar: the reminder that golf is, at its core, a walk with purpose.

The trees here deserve their own mention — tall, proud, layered in shades of green so rich they feel almost painted. Their shadows spill across the fairways in dramatic patterns, creating natural challenges and opportunities for creativity. As the day progresses, those shadows lengthen, deepening the contrast and adding a sense of mystery to the landscape. For a photographer, it’s magic. For a golfer, it’s joy. For anyone who loves the outdoors, it’s an invitation to linger.

There are places in the world where golf becomes secondary to the setting, and Windsor is one of those rare places. The chorus of birdsong, the soft hum of the forest, the unhurried pace of play — it all creates an atmosphere that feels restorative. Even if the game isn’t going your way, the walk certainly is.
This image, capturing two players making their way down a lush Kenyan fairway, represents more than just a hole on a golf course. It represents the universal experience of the game: companionship, exploration, and the quiet thrill of discovering beauty between one shot and the next. It speaks to the connection between golfer and landscape, a connection that transcends borders and cultures.

If this photograph brings back memories of your own experiences in Africa — or inspires dreams of one day playing beneath those towering Kenyan trees — I invite you to explore it in the Golf As Life Signature Collection. The print options allow you to bring a piece of that lush, sunlit serenity into your home, office, or golf simulator room.
