Embracing the Legacy of Karsten Creek: A Journey Through the Heart of Cowboy Country

Nestled less than sixty miles from my hometown in the sweeping landscapes of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Karsten Creek Golf Club stands as a testament to the rich heritage and competitive spirit of the Oklahoma State Cowboys golf team. As one of my favorite places to capture, this course offers more than just a game; it embodies a legacy woven deeply into the fabric of collegiate golf.

Designed by Mastermind Tom Fazio

Renowned for its meticulous design, Karsten Creek is the brainchild of the legendary golf course architect Tom Fazio. Opened in 1994, it has since been a beacon of challenge and beauty, marrying natural landscapes with strategic play that both amateurs and professionals find invigorating. Fazio, known for his attention to the natural topography, ensures each hole blends seamlessly with the surrounding environment, making every round a picturesque experience.

Home of Champions

Karsten Creek is not just a golf course; it’s the battleground where the Oklahoma State Cowboys have honed their skills and carved their path in collegiate golf history. This course has witnessed numerous victories and has been a part of training some of the finest players in the sport. It serves as a living museum of golf where every tee, fairway, and green tells the story of triumphs and challenges. Here are some familiar Cowboy golfers: Rickie Fowler, Scott Verplank, Peter Uihlein, Viktor Holland, and Bob Tway.

The Beauty of Hole #11

Hole #11, where the attached image is captured, is particularly close to my heart. This par-3 beauty is both a challenge and a charm, with its strategic bunkering and the meandering creek that comes into play, demanding precision and strategy. The serene waters and the lush greenery encapsulate the essence of Oklahoma’s natural beauty, making it a favorite subject of my photography.

Each week, we share a stunning golf image and a heartfelt, hilarious, or inspiring story. While they may not always align, both aim to elevate the game and uplift those who love it. These images aren’t for sale—they’re simply here to be enjoyed, just as the stories are meant to inspire, entertain, and celebrate the spirit of golf.

Mr. Palmer

The last time saw Arnold Palmer was my most memorable. One day in the Spring of 2014, my son, Zachary, and I were checking into Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando. Mr. Palmer stood not far away from the small check-in desk. Any chance to interact with the King (he hated that moniker) was always a treat. Here’s what transpired:

ME: Hello, Mr. Palmer… Steve Pike… nice to see you again.

ARNOLD PALMER: Steve, how long have I know you?

ME: Around 25 years.

ARNOLD PALMER: And what have I always told you to call me?

ME: Uh… Arnie?

ARNOLD PALMER:  Damn right.

ME: Yessir, Mr.Palmer.
